Produced by the Federal Ordnance Department, here is a fired, Type 2, three inch Hotchkiss percussion shell in very good condition recovered from the battle at Vicksburg. Projectile retains its base cup and its brass time fuse adapter in the nose. Iron base cup, which is detachable, has been moderately fragmented at the rim, else fine. This Hotchkiss shell appears to have been fired from a Rifled 6-pounder Ordnance gun. The majority of these 3.67” rounds have come from Vicksburg with a few also found at Gettysburg. Lead sabot band is missing. Entire shell is coated with a clear shellac material and sports a large numeral “29” in white paint on the hose. Three deep flame grooves cut through the body and the base cup. Due to rust pitting of the base cap shows faint remains of the standard lettering stamped along the outer edge. Round is diffused. Iron body of the shell has acquired a dark plum / brown patina. Length: 6¾”; diameter: 2¾.” A great Federal artillery collectible from Vicksburg.
