This honest and complete artifact from the Civil War is an original, unopened packet of five Federal artillery paper time fuses that are still contained within the wooden block covered with its original light beige colored paper wrap. Paper suffers from scattered light surface grime but is wrapped in a thin sheet of plastic. Rectangular packet measures 3” long x 2” wide x ¾” high and displays the maker’s stamping that clearly reads “FRANKFORD ARSENAL / 1863 / 8 SECOND FUZES” on the face. The five pull ribbons or cloth tabs are intact and line the top edge of the package. The five paper wrapped black powder artillery time fuses are nestled in cylindrical holes drilled into the rectangular block of wood. This artifact is a nice example of an integral component of a Federal artilleryman’s Civil War weapons system.
