Very rare ammunition crate for 10 rounds of 20 PDR rifle shells fixed for the 3.67” 20 PDR Parrott – Hotchkiss Gun. This crate exhibits faded white stenciled lettering along the face length side reading: FROM WATERVLIET ARSENAL. The reverse side (due to the loss of paint and surface scarring) shows only the No 292 located on the upper right side, while the remainder of the lettering is mostly obliterated. Located on the right side end board under the handle-cleat is the wording: 20 PDR, RIFLE SHELLS FIXED 1861. While on the other end board it reflexes the same wording, only less visible. The original lid to this crate is present and is stenciled on the under side WATERVLIET ARSENAL NOV. 1861. At one time in its history (most likely in the post-war period) someone had decided to convert this crate into a hinged top and locked box, as can be seen on the inner side of the lid, the mortised areas where the two hinges had been attached and the area where the lock was inserted. There is approximately 70% of the original “Forest Green” paint remaining on the surfaces. Also, there is a set of rope holes located on both handle-cleats.
