TINTYPE OF A UNION ZOUAVE WITH MISSISSIPPI RIFLE IN A THERMOPLASTIC CASE

$975.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 433-07

Image is a full standing quarter-plate tintype of a Zouave at a “rest” position posed in front of a painted backdrop of a tree lined stream.  The subject wears a dark chasseur style kepi, a dark waist length jacket with rather large buttons, matching loose fitting trousers and white gaiters. On his chest are two large ribbons one of which appears to have a 6th Corps Badge attached to it. Around his waist is a belt with saber bayonet and scabbard attached. The belt plate is not clearly visible and cannot be determined as to style. The subject holds a Mississippi rifle with fixed saber bayonet. Since the subject also wears a bayonet it can be assumed that the one on the rifle, if not the rifle itself, is a photographer’s prop.  After careful examination of the image it is believed to be a period copy. It is extremely well done and difficult to detect. Image is very clear but the contrast is a little dark.

Item comes housed in a figural thermoplastic case depicting "Sir Roger DeCoverly and the Gypsies” which is a story from 18th Century England. The exterior of the case is in good condition however there are a few repairs. One side has a tiny hole where one of the hinge anchors is missing. The opposite side has a tiny chip out of the upper right corner and a thin closed and repaired crack that runs about 2 inches. This repair is well done and blends perfectly. Interior of the case has a brown crushed velvet lining with brass hinges. The upper hinge has been repaired causing some slight damage to the upper corner of the lining. Behind the image is a complete label for the case with some period pencil writing, none of which has anything to do with the image.

Despite the slightly dark contrast this is a very clear and striking Zouave image.
