Document is in a modern frame and meas. approx. 11.00 x 15.50 inches. Document is pre-printed with eagle at top and is filled out in legible ink. The document is dated November 14, 1865 and is promoting Corporal Ezra Pickens to Seventh Corporal in Company F. The very bottom of the item is signed by Francis L. Hersey as Regimental Adjutant and Lt. Col. E. H. Enochs as Commanding Officer. Document is in good shape with one horizontal fold and four vertical folds.
Not much is known about Corporal Pickens other than the fact that he served in the regiment. Francis L. Hersey enlisted as a Sergeant in the 5th West Virginia in September of 1861 and rose to the rank of 1st Lt. and Adjutant before being mustered out in November of 1864. He was then transferred to Co. A, 1st West Virginia Veteran Volunteers where he continued as 1st Lt. and Adjutant. He was mustered out on July 21, 1865.
William H. Enochs enlisted as a Sergeant in Co. C, 22nd Ohio Infantry in April of 1861. Four months later he left the 22nd to take a commission as 1st Lt. in Co. E of the 5th West Virginia Infantry where he rose to Lt. Colonel. When the 5th West Virginia’s time expired in November of 1864 he was transferred to the 1st West Virginia Veteran Volunteers. Here he was commissioned Colonel December 23rd 1864 and Brigadier General by Brevet on March 13, 1865. He was mustered out on July 21, 1865.
