John S. Godfrey was born in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire on March 1, 1827. He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Quartermaster of the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on June 4, 1861. On October 31, 1861 he was discharged for promotion to Captain in the Quartermaster’s Department to serve on General Hooker’s staff. The promotion was in reward for Godfrey’s service at 1st Bull Run where he managed to save some stores and munitions.

Godfrey was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on November 10, 1862 and served as Chief Quartermaster of the Centre Grand Division which was commanded by General Hooker. Godfrey received two brevet promotions to major and lieutenant colonel on March 13, 1865. He was mustered out on June 6, 1865.

In 1889 Godfrey moved to Pasadena, California where he was a “water finder.” Being a student of geology and underground water currents he was very successful in locating water bearing lands. Godfrey claimed “to get a peculiar thrill when he stood over veins of water running deep under the surface.”

Godfrey died in Pasadena on September 5, 1899 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.

The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  [ad]
