Manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Company, this very early, original cap and ball percussion sidearm is an original, double-action Navy Contract Model revolver in very good condition. In 1860, business partners Henry S. North and Edward Savage of Middletown, Connecticut established the manufacturing firm in that city and produced a total of 20,000 such sidearms from 1861 through the mid 1860s. Of that total, only 800 Savage revolvers were contracted by the U. S. Navy.
Sidearm is a .36 caliber double-action model with a six-shot plain rounded cylinder, a 7 1/8” long octagonal barrel that employs a hinged type loading lever assembly. Barrel retains its brass cone-type tapered front sight. Revolver frame is flat-sided and fitted with a heart-shaped trigger / lever guard. Fine, two-piece walnut grips exhibit a mellow patina. No government inspector’s cartouches are visible. Barrel is stamped with a small anchor on top of barrel just ahead of the frame. The plain, round cylinder is unmarked save for Navy inspector markings that include “P” (proved) over the initials “J. R. G” (Capt. John R. Goldsborough – inspector).
Original nipples protrude from the side of the cylinder and are in poor condition with one completely missing and the others are broken and hammered down. Original frame screws are in very good condition but the small frame screw at the loading lever area is buggered up. Entire revolver displays a dark, plum patina on the metal surfaces in addition to a surface of light patches of rust pitting and oxidation. Mechanically strong.
This rare, Navy-marked and inspected, government contract Civil War Savage D.A. revolver is a specimen that would certainly compliment any gun collection.
