Standard issue British made US Model 1917 helmet with OD painted exterior and very light sand finish. Exterior shows light to moderate wear from age use and storage. There are three shallow dents in the crown but no rust spots.
Painted on the front rim in white paint is “104” and the initials “L.W.B.” The regimental number “104” can be for Infantry, Machine –Gun Battalion, Artillery, Engineers, Sanitary Train, Ammo Train etc… No way to know for sure.
Interior of helmet is complete with a good oilcloth liner and a worn leather chinstrap. Tip of leather suspension strap in crown has split at the end causing the chinstrap to hang loose and allowing the liner to move. Chinstrap is complete with keeper and may be able to be sewn back in place if the leather of the split is strong enough. Painted in white around the underside of the helmet rim is “ST. MIHIEL” and “ARGONNE MEUSE.” Small dot of white paint with collection number can be found near front. [ad]
