This two-piece badge is known as the Southern Cross of Honor. It has a plain top bar with original pin on reverse. When presented to a veteran his name would be engraved on the front of the bar.
Suspended by the bar by a single link is a Maltese cross with a laurel wreath at the center. In the wreath is a Confederate battle flag. Around the arms of the cross is the wording, "UNITED DAUGHTERS CONFEDERACY TO THE U.C.V."
The reverse of the cross has another laurel wreath at center with "DEO VINDICE 1861" over "1865". The wording around the cross reads, "SOUTHERN CROSS OF HONOR".
The Southern Cross of Honor was a commemorative medal established in 1899 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to honor Confederate veterans. They were awarded from the years 1900-1959. Charles W. Crankshaw of Atlanta, Georgia, was chosen as the contactor to produce the medal. His maker's mark is on the reverse of top bar. [sl]
