This Confederate veteran’s slouch hat is in superb condition. It is made of felt, light tan in color, with the brass “CV” wreath pin still in place. Original ribbon band is sewn at the base of the crown. Matching ribbon surrounds the brim.
Maker label on the silk lining of crown reads, “ETCHINSON CRAFTED, EST’D. 1866, REG. U.S, PAT. OFF. GOOD HATS SINCE 1866”. The Etchinson Hat Company was located in Richmond, Virginia. This hat was sold by the distributor, Henson Bros. Co. of London, Kentucky. Their name is embossed in gold on the inner leather sweatband as well as an embossed Etchinson label. Size label reads, “LONG OVAL 7”.
Hat measures 11 ¼” wide by 13” long by 4 ½” high. Lining shows brown staining. All stitching is tight and hat retains a nice shape. Front of crown shows three pin holes, which were likely from reunion pins being placed at those areas. [sl]
