Very nice conditioned black felt slouch hat. Felt is supple and only exhibits light surface dirt from age and storage.
The crown is creased fore and aft. Front crease has two vertical slits caused either by the creasing or removed insignia. These are not very discernable. The front of the crown has a bullion wreath on a black felt backing sewn to the front. Signs of removed insignia is slightly visible but this is not unusual as veterans often changed GAR Posts when they moved. The crown has a black ribbed ribbon going around its base along with a gold and black officer’s hat cord. Both are in nice condition.
The interior has a complete 2.50 inch high brown leather sweatband. Sweatband shows wear from use. Above the sweatband are the paper applied letters “HSD” which are no doubt the soldier’s initials. Small bits of each letter is missing.
All that is needed to complete the hat are the letters “GAR” or a Post number in the wreath. [ad]
