Worn by Federal officers in most of the branches of the United States Army, the waist sash was a common uniform accoutrement that signified a symbol of authority in the military during both field operations and camp duty. This original sash, when worn over the frock coat, was wrapped twice around the waist and looped on the left side. Then the officer’s leather sword belt was worn over the sash. Specimen exhibits a deep, rich crimson color and consists of a 4” wide by 122” long length of woven silk in a tight weave with a single, 1½” long ‘braided acorns’ that terminates at each end. Each acorn displays 5” long, twisted silk tassels secured along each acorn brim. Tassels retain almost all the original deep crimson color. Stitching on one tassel head is frayed. Sash body is in good condition overall with no staining. Visible are a number of fabric pulls and small perforations. Does have one weak area (large 3” diameter hole near the tassels). Great piece at a great price.
