This broadaxe was recovered at or near Fredericksburg. These were mainly used in hewing square timbers so it might well have come in handy constructing winter huts, which were all over the landscape around Fredericksburg in the winter of 1862-63. This is a nice example, solid, with a pretty, even brown patina, and pitting, to the flats, but only very minor losses to the edge. There is a die-struck maker’s name that we read as “CHAGNAUD / AUCAPET,” but we have not been able to identify or date the maker. It has great form in any case. [sr][ph:m]
