This fixed-tongue frame buckle is a classic Confederate soldier’s belt buckle. These brass buckles are a collecting specialty of their own, coming in a variety of sizes and showing variations in configuration with flat and hollow-back frames, center bars and teeth cast raised from the frame or in line with it, etc., but were strong, light, simple to make, widely produced, and saw service in every theatre of the war. This one was found at Chickamauga, the great battle in the west fought in September 1863 that made a few reputations, like that of George Thomas, and destroyed a few, like that of Rosecrans, who ended up bottled up and under siege at Chattanooga.

In this case teeth and center bar appear to be cast in one plain with the frame, but the reverse shows both the center bar and teeth to have raised spines to strengthen them that have been fairly well finished on the teeth, which are pointed, but rather casually finished on the center bar. The face was finished well, but reverse of the frame still shows file marks, typical on buckles valuing practicality and function, and rushed to completion to meet the army’s needs. The center bar has a slight wave to it, and there is an indentation to one inner corner of the frame, either damage in use or a casting flaw. The points are very good. The face shows a mix of green, gray and brown. The reverse shows a thinner green and more gray and brown.

This is nice example of a quintessential CS belt buckle that displays very well and would be good addition to a collection of Civil War plates and buckles.  [sr][ph:L]
