This is a US 3” Schenkl artillery shell that was captured or was fired and did not detonate. It would have been sent to a Confederate arsenal where it was refitted and reissued to Confederate artillery. Approximately 9” long and in excavated, relic condition. The unusual looking, Schenkl shell features seven vertical ribs on the tapered base. It employed a papier-mache sabot which would have disintegrated upon firing. The original brass percussion fuse would have been stamped "J.P. SCHENKL PAT. OCT. 16, 1861.”

The Confederate alteration of this Federal shell consists of drilling the base and adding the iron pin which was to hold a new wood sabot. A typical CS copper time fuse adapter was used to replace the original Schenkl fuse.

This excavated shell is in solid condition and a rare example of a Confederate “recycled” artillery shell.  [jet]
