Image is a chest-up view of John Irvin in the typical dark civilian suit with white shirt and bowtie.

Contrast and clarity are good. Mount corners are clipped. Paper has light surface dirt. Glued to the bottom of the mount is a slip of paper with a period ink ID of “JOHN IRVIN.” The ID covers the photographers mark of BENDANN BROS… BALTIMORE.

Reverse repeats the photographer’s mark with a modern pencil ID.

Records show John Irvin enlisted in the 2nd Battery Maryland Artillery (Baltimore Battery) on October 28, 1861 and that he was present through December of that year.

Irvin’s record in the National Archives is only three pages long and does not say anything about his service or discharge. It is possible that he transferred to the 4th Maryland Artillery at some point. It is known that he is buried on Confederate Hill in Loudon Park Cemetery and that his body was moved there from Virginia in 1874.  [ad][ph:L]
