Back-mark: “Published by E. & H.T. Anthony…from Photographic Negative by BRADY.” Standard carte de visite, featuring bare-headed Meagher in full uniform w/kepi in right hand, against studio backdrop. Clean, clear image, though slightly faded, w/ few tiny spots in the left & lower margins. Else VG.

A native Irishman, Meagher took part in various independence movements, with the consequence of being banished to Tasmania by the British Government. Surfacing in California, he made his way to New York and became a leader of the Young Ireland group. In 1861 he organized a zouave unit attached the 69th New York militia, and in 1862 organized “The Irish Brigade” and was appointed Brigadier General. This famed Brigade took part in all battles of the Army of the Potomac from Bull run to Chancellorsville, after which Meagher resigned when the Army high command refused him permission to recruit he depleted ranks. Though not with the Brigade at Gettysburg, Meagher was reinstated he was re-instated and in 1864 exercised command in the rear of Gen Sherman’s armies. Following the war he was appointed territorial secretary of the Montana and served as acting Governor for more than a year. In July 1867, on a drunken spree, he fell from a steamboat deck into the Missouri and drowned.
