$350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 945-201

Nice clear image of a young soldier posed in a photographer’s studio.

The subject wears the dark double piped shell jacket peculiar to the 15th Pennsylvania with matching dark trouser and knee-high boots. At his waist is his sword belt with what is likely a rectangular eagle plate and, on his hands, he wears leather gauntlets.  He holds his cavalry sabre in front of him. On his left side is a sword knot; on the right side the saber’s scabbard is visible. He also wears a forage cap with cavalry insignia on the crown.

Image is clean with good contrast. Edges are trimmed, with clipped corners.

Backmark reads, “F. GUTEKUNST / Photographer, / 704 & 706 Arch St., / PHILADA.”

The 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in October of 1862 and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. The regiment saw action at Stones River, Mossy Creek and several smaller skirmishes. During its service the regiment lost 128 officers and men killed, died wounds and disease plus others wounded.   [ad/ld]
