The USS Sassacus was a wooden, double-ended side-wheel steamer, launched on 12/23/1862 by the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine, and was commissioned 10/5/1863 at the Boston Navy Yard w/Lieut. Commander Francis A. Roe in command. In January 1864 the Sassacus joined the outer blockade of Wilmington, NC, and saw action against inward blockade runners, Wild Dayrell, and the Nutfield, recently arrived from Bermuda. Later, in the Albemarle Sound, she rammed the Confederate ram, CSS Albemarle, and still that summer operated on the James River. The Sassacus also participated in the two amphibious assaults on Fort Fisher led by Gen. Butler [unsuccessful] and Gen. Terry [successful]. Unquestionably this ship saw considerable action before being decommissioned and laid up at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in May 1865.
