This is the standard issue Union army Civil War mess cup, constructed of tinned sheet iron and roughly 4.5 inches tall and 4.25 inches in diameter. Mess gear came through the various recruiting services, state and federal, and varied in design. This style is pictured early on in the war and seems to have been the pattern used once the U.S. government took over. A main concern of the army was that mess cups not come apart if heated over a camp fire and this one shows the standard rolled and crimped edges, and a handle secured with wire and rivet. The color is an even oxidized gray to the tin-clad sheet iron. There are no holes, dents or rust.
This would be an excellent addition to a collection of soldiers’ field gear, north or south, since southern troops would gladly supply themselves from captured federal equipment. [sr]
