This is an excellent mid-war holster with full flap, belt loop, toe plug, and sewn and riveted latch tab. It fits a Colt 1860 Army perfectly, and this case the soldier even wrote the serial number of his pistol inside the flap, “116346,” as a reminder and guard against loss in camp. (The serial number fits a Colt Army made in 1863.)
The stitching is tight and all elements are in place and secure. The color and finish are very good. There is some expected crazing to the surface from age, but very few spots of finish loss, which are hard to spot in any case. The leather has good body, not hard and not flimsy, and would look great on cavalry belt rig or displayed with a cavalry revolver.
Civil War cavalrymen were typically armed with saber, pistol, and carbine. This is a very good military issue holster, with full flap and configured to ride on the trooper’s right side with the butt forward. This would be an excellent addition to a cavalry display, could complete a nice condition regulation cavalry saber belt rig, or display very nicely with a Colt Army. [AD]
