This is an example of an early 19th century American militia cartridge box with its original linen web sling and 24 hole wood cartridge block. The design of this box has origins dating back to the Revolutionary War. The box shown here exhibits those earlier period characteristics plus some later design additions such as an iron rivet placed through the outer leather flap holding a inner tin closure clasp. The leather body covering of the wood cartridge block, as well as the linen sling, is applied by the means of small iron tacks. Front of the flap shows stamped tooling designs in a cross punched pattern and tooled border edge.
Condition: Leather body covering and outer flap are in a fragile state with crazing, and surface losses. Slight separation of the left leather panel of the box. Tin clip-slot closure located on the bottom of the box is missing. One tack remaining on the left side holding the sling to the box. Linen sling stained with usage and age.
Box dimensions: 8” length x 3” depth x 2 ¼” width. Flap: 8 1/2” length x 4 ½” depth.
