This stamped brass device is an excellent example of a Civil War Cavalry officer’s hat insignia. Device features two long sabers crossed below their center points. This specimen has scabbard rings touching the quillion of the knuckle guard. Made to mimic the regulation insignia that was constructed of embroidered bullion thread, these stamped brass variants were much sturdier in the field. This specimen is in very good condition. The one-piece insignia measures about 3 ¾” wide and is 1 ¾” high. This piece shows a pleasing dark patina on the face while the back is bright and mostly untarnished. There are no bends or dents. Piece retains two of the four original, small brass wires soldered to the body. Reference Figure 455 in Campbell & O’Donnell’s “Headgear Insignia.”
A fine specimen of a Civil War cavalry officer’s hat insignia. [jet]
