This spheroid canteen looks a lot like its Civil War predecessor in style and construction. The difference is that there are only two triangular sling keepers instead of three squared keepers and the stopper chain is attached to the spout by a ring. Cork stopper is complete.
Canteen is covered in a khaki canvas with a nice bold “U.S.” inked in black on one side. Cover is in very good condition. It is cleaner than most encountered although there are some faint stains scattered throughout. The body of the canteen is practically free of dents and the cover is free of any separations or tears.
This is NOT a Civil War canteen that was recovered.
A very nice example of the late 19th and early 20th Century US canteen. [ad]
