MILITIA OFFICER’S WAIST BELT WITH VIRGINIA TWO PIECE BUCKLE

Item Code: 697-142

Offered here is a superb example of a Pre-Civil War State of Virginia militia officer’s waist belt & buckle. This two piece interlocking version of a wreath & tongue set, consisting of a cast brass plate with a die-stamped brass tongue disc, is of the pattern shown on page 198, Plate # 366 of CONFEDERATE BELT BUCKLES & PLATES By: Steve E. Mullinax (1991 edition). In its original state the overall surface of this buckle had been gold-plated. But unfortunately, this has been lost due to time and use in field service.

The waist belt consists of thin outer patent coated leather laid on and stitched over an inner core of natural finished leather. There are also present three brass elongated loops, which separates the belt into four sections for added flexibility. On the inner left side of the belt is the remaining ¾”adjustment strap and roller buckle which has separated from the main body of the belt that holds the “spoon or tongue” in place.

Condition of the belt & buckle: The outer patent leather surface has some crazing and worn surface area issues. Overall leather is still supple. Buckle has an overall pleasing dark patina with some wear on the high surface areas of Liberty and Tyrant.

A superior Southern / Confederate related item to advance your collection.
