Haversack is made entirely of white linen. The body, sling and inner bag are all original. Exterior of the flap has a soldier’s name and unit stenciled on it with other markings on the back of the body. These are spurious. However, under the flap is a proper period marking that is faint and reads in part “STATE OF MASS. INSPECTED ????” the rest is too faint to read.
The body of the haversack meas. approx. 10.50 inches at its widest by 9.75 inches high. Sewn to the body are two bone buttons which hold the flap closed.
Interior of the body has a linen bag that is held in place by three bone buttons across the back and one at front center.
Linen sling is approx. 1.25 inches wide and is sewn to the bag at each end.
Linen is in excellent condition and just shows some light surface dirt and staining from age and storage. [ad]
