CIVIL WAR US ARTILLERY LANYARD

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M24685A

A standard implement with every artillery piece, this rare, Civil War era US Army Artillery Gunner’s Lanyard has survived the years in excellent condition. The iron hook at the end of the hemp lanyard was attached to the ring of the friction primer set in the breech of the gun tube, and the full length 13’ cord allowed the gunner to stand clear of the recoil path when the gun was fired.

The turned cylindrical wooden handle measures 4 ½" long and 1” in diameter at the center of the handle.  The hemp cord – or “cod line” as it was named in the 1863 Ordnance Manual – is full length. The original iron hook was field replaced and is intact on the end of the cord. This lanyard is in excellent condition and will be a very nice addition to your Civil War collection.
