Copper bugle with brass fittings. This bugle is a single twist with a brass reinforced bell. The brass on the top of the bell is marked in script “KLEMM & BRO. PHILADELPHIA” in two lines. The stamping of the ampersand is light but the names are clear. Where the base of the horn connects to the twist there is a brass spacer approx. 1.50 inches wide. Also, the tail section of the twist has a 5.50 inch long section of brass that receives a brass mouthpiece which is present. The bugle has a number of small dings and a few small dents. There is one major dent along the bottom edge of the twist.
The Klemm & Bro. Company appears in Philadelphia directories as early as 1830 and disappears about 1879. During the Civil War they had many Government contracts for brass instruments including bugles. Civil War era bugles are a scarce item and very popular. This one has a nice used look to it.
