Image shows Lieutenant Colonel Francis A. Osborn posed with one arm behind his back and the other resting on the back of a chair. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat and matching dark trousers with a sash and waist belt but no sword.

Image is clean and has good contrast. There does seem to be some light surface discolorations around the subject but it does not detract in anyway. All details of the subject are crisp and clear.

The reverse of the image has a photographer’s back mark for SILSBEE, CASE & CO…BOSTON. Above this mark in period ink is inscribed “FOR MRS. BURNSIDE, ANNAPOLIS JAN 1/62” and below the mark is “F. A. OSBORN, LT. COL. 24 REG. MASS. VOL.”

Francis Augustus Osborn was born in Danvers, Massachusetts on September 22, 1833. After his education Osborn went into real estate and banking.

Osborn began his military service as a Captain in the 4th Massachusetts Militia before being commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 24th Massachusetts on August 31, 1861. The 24th was assigned to Burnsides North Carolina Expedition and served in that theater of war till 1864. They saw action at Roanoke Island, New Bern, Tranter’s Creek, Swansboro, Washington, Rawle’s Mills, Batchelder’s Creek, Plymouth and Whitehall. On December 28, 1862 Osborn was promoted to Colonel of the regiment.

The regiment then moved to South Carolina where it saw action at James and Morris Island before being moved to Florida where it was engaged at St. Augustine.

By May of 1864 the 24th had moved to Virginia where is saw action at Bermuda Hundred, Drewry’s Bluff and Deep Bottom. At the latter battle Colonel Osborn was wounded. He was mustered out on November 11, 1864.  [ad]
