Clark enlisted as a Private on 10/3/62 into Co. L. He was 23 years old from Philadelphia and his occupation was listed as draftsman. He was promoted to QM Sgt. On 3/1/63. On May 8, 1863 he attained the rank of Captain. He was wounded in action at Gatlinsburg, TN on 12/10/63 and was sent to a hospital at Knoxville. In early 1864 he was given 30 days leave from March until his discharge in June of 1865. He serves in Philadelphia for draft “rendezvous” and in the Adjutant General’s office, never fully recovering from his wound (a gunshot wound to the left knee in a skirmish with Cherokee Indians). Clark draws a pension until his death in Philadelphia on Oct. 1, 1921.
The compass has a shiny metal dial and brass case and lid. The glass is cracked but secured in the case. The lid has his name & rank scratched on the outside and matches his signature in his pension/military files, which are included with the compass. Inside lid is scratched with name and rank. Compass fully functional.
