CIVIL WAR SNARE DRUM ID’D TO 6TH REGIMENT PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER CORPS; MADE BY HORSTMANN

$5,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 51-113

Standard issue Civil War period snare drum with great painted Eagle. Drum has been cut down slightly. It meas. approx. 14.50 inches tall and is approx. 17.00 inches across. Both hoops are present and have 90% of the original paint. There are some dings and dents in the rims of the hoops from use and age. The top hoop has two or three small areas of wood loss along the top edge. The bottom hoop has more wear due to the drum resting on the ground. This wear goes halfway around and is limited to the outer most edge. The body of the drum has a wonderful spread winged Eagle. The painting is 98% present with just light surface crackling. Because the drum has been trimmed the very top edge of the blue clouds and sunrays above the Eagle are missing. The tack pattern runs in a sweeping “U” beside the painting with a smaller circle of tacks around the view-hole. Interior has excellent paper label that reads “MANUFACTURED, BY WM. H. HORSTMANN & SONS, MILITARY FURNISHERS, NO.51 NORTH THIRD STREET, PHILADELPHIA.” Label is 100% intact.

Tension rope is old but is not the original. The wear patterns on the hoops where the rope passes in and out match so the rope must have been on there for some time. Top head is very dirty and stained with a small hole at center. Bottom head has 8 snares, one of which is broken. This head is cleaner than the top and has some faint writing on it in period ink. There are also three 5 pointed stars stenciled along one edge. Two are blue and one is red. These meas. approx. 4.00 inches across. The ink writing looks to be a soldier’s stencil. The name is difficult to read but below the name is what looks to be “Co.D, 6 P.V.C.” for 6th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Corps. This regiment served with the Army of the Potomac from March of 1862 to February of 1863 when it was transferred to the 22nd Corps in the defenses of Washington, D. C.

It rejoined the Army of the Potomac in June of 1863 and was with that Army until mustered out on June 11, 1864. This is a wonderful drum in very good condition ID to a hard fought regiment in the Army of the Potomac.
