This saddle came to us from a dealer who got it right from a local family. The family was from the New Oxford-Hanover area. Family tradition says the saddle was picked up in the Devil’s Den area 6 months or so after the battle and was stored in their barn until they sold it to the dealer we got it from. With the item comes a letter attesting to these particulars.

Saddle has a leather covered McClellan style seat. The wooden tree is covered with what was once black leather that has now turned a dark brown. The inside seam that runs along the cutout in the seat is split half way around and for a short span under the cantel.  The outside seam is split for about 5.00 inches along the front with an area of severe wear at the top of the cantel. This outside seam is also split near the back of the saddle in two places. 4.00 inches in one spot and 3.00 in another. These are all just seam separations from shrinkage of the leather and not tears. Three large tacks are used across the front and the back to anchor the harness straps. One of the tacks on the back is missing. Three large tacks were also used on each side of the saddle to anchor a short hood above the iron rectangular rings where the stirrup straps attached to the saddle. The hood on the left side is missing one tack while all three tacks and the hood are missing from the right side. Right side stirrup strap is complete. The left side is present but broken. The stirrups are mismatched. Both are made of iron and have rust throughout. One stirrup has wide sides while the other is more streamlined and what is usually seen. Half of the cinch strap is present, the rest is broken. All leather is stiff and dirty from being in a barn for so long. All the furniture is iron. This style saddle is similar to a Confederate officer’s saddle made at the Clarkesville Shops.  A copy of the information on the Clarkesville saddle comes with this item.
