Remington manufactured approximately 1500 Model 1885 rifles for the Navy. The Model 1885 is identical to the Model 1882 except for the larger extractor and cocking knob. In 1880 the Navy contracted with James Lee for full stock bolt action 45-70 caliber rifles. Sharps were contracted to manufacture the rifles but Sharps did not manufacture any. All parts and tooling was turned over to Remington Arms Company. The rifle has a 32-inch round barrel, full stock and two barrel bands. Inspector’s markings are on the left side of the stock and the receiver is marked with initials and anchor. The model 1885 is marked REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY, ILION, N.Y. U.S.A. / SOLE MANUFACTURERS & AGENTS and PATENTED NOV. 4TH, 1879.
This is a model 1885 rifle, serial number 2526. All iron parts are a dusky plum brown that has not been cleaned. Stock has been lightly sanded with traces of the cartouche is visible. Shows all markings are crisp. Bore is bright with good rifling. Cleaning rod is missing.
