MODEL 1861 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET, DATED 1861

$3,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 218-390

This early example from the Springfield Armory is dated 1861 on the lockplate, thus being the first year of manufacture and issue of this model. Rifle is in excellent condition showing some field usage, but still containing all of its original parts. The bore rifling is above average and slightly dusty from long storage, but will need a wipe or two with an oiled patch to clean.

Walnut stock shows typical scratches and minor dings from, again field use. No detected cracks or hair lines at the locations of the wrist and lock mortise. Both Inspectors cartouches are present, but faint.

All metallic parts, barrel, barrel bands, nose cap, ramrod, trigger guard, butt plate and lock & hammer show a pleasant darkened oxidized patina throughout. Some pitting located around the breech and bolster areas. Breech date not visible. A series of 18 (of unknown origin) surface scars located on the top of the barrel, both below and above the third barrel band. All screw heads and slots are crisp and undamaged. Band springs retain their origin bluing. Ramrod threads are present and in good usable order. Lock action still very crisp in both half cock and full cock positions.

Again, a very desirable early war dated example that has survived rigorous field usage. Truly worthy of a place in your advanced collection.
