A complete, very good condition Model 1861 .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket and dated 1862 produced by the Federal armory in Springfield, Mass. Musket retains its original stock, the original iron nipple and bolster screw, swell-shaped ramrod, both barrel bands and sling hooks. All gun metal has areas of light to moderate pitting. Lock plate, barrel, breech, bands, buttplate and ramrod all show cleaning. Breech area at bolster reflects pitting while the date stamp on the top flat has been rusted away. Barrel exhibits a 40” long gun barrel and bears no stampings save for the “V P and proof marks” near the breech. Light pinprick rusting is scattered over the entire barrel. Mechanics are crisp. Lock plate screws very good save the buggered up bolster screw. Black walnut stock, in good condition overall, has rounded edges and has been cleaned. No cracks in the wood. Some dings and dents are visible on the stock. No cartouche is visible on the flat opposite the hammer. Lock plate is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” under the bolster and has “1862” stamped behind the C-shaped hammer. The tulip-head, steel ramrod exhibits the swelled shank and the threaded tip.
