Item Code: 169-206

This original British longarm is a percussion model, 10-bore (.75 / .76 caliber), smoothbore, single-shot muzzleloader in good overall condition. The P/42 musket was the last regulation smoothbore produced for the British army and built only in percussion. It changed little from the older Brown Bess flintlock. The heavy longarm measures a total length of 54½” and has a 39” long barrel. Barrel is secured to the full walnut stock via three flat barrel tab keys.  No bands or springs.

Barrel has a plain, notched rear sight dovetailed and brazed to the barrel. Left facet of barrel is stamped with British proof marks.  Barrel surface has been cleaned at one time and wears a pleasing dusky mottled plum / gray patina. The lockplate surface is a dark dusky gray and exhibits a mild peppery look from scattered fine rust pitting. Lockplate is marked in front of the hammer with a standing lion holding a raised British crown. Two thin lines of tooling decorate the outer edge of the plate surface and also decorates the edge of the rounded hammer.

Longarm features brass furniture that includes a large brass trigger guard, buttplate, and nose cap. Three brass ramrod pipes beneath the stock with the upper being trumpet-shaped and the two lower pipes of barrel shape. All brass wears a mellow bronze patina. Sling swivels at the triggerguard and at the front of the stock. Black walnut stock has been refinished and is strong with no cracks or breaks.  Wood surface is dark. Straight shank ramrod has a button-head tip with a slightly concave head. Top three inches of the tip appears to have been replaced and terminates in a four-sided rod. No bayonet. This type of Pattern 1842 musket saw limited use in the American Civil War.
