M-1854 AUSTRIAN LORENZ RIFLE

This is the Austrian M-1854 Lorenz rifle musket. The Lorenz was the third most used rifle-musket during the American Civil War, with US purchases in excess of 250,000 and documented CS purchases of at least 100,000.

This Lorenz is 100% complete and original. The barrel is smooth and clean with scattered dark streaks. The breech, however, is heavily pitted with no marks visible on the top of barrel. Left barrel flat shows some assembly numbers. The .54 caliber bore is a little dirty but has the original four-groove rifling intact. The original long-range, flip-up rear site is present.

The lock is unmarked with a smooth surface. The lock works perfectly in all positions and the action remains crisp. Assembly numbers can be found on several of the metal components. The gun retains its original early style iron ramrod including full threads (rammer head is a little mashed up) as well as both original sling swivels.

The stock is in very fine condition. This is the version that has a cheek rest on the left side. The beech wood has a nice brown-orange color to it. The wood retains sharp edges and perfect contours. Even the rammer channel remains sharp and un-splintered. This example was found in North Carolina and shows features typically associated with those imported by the Confederacy.

Overall this is a very nice, complete .54 caliber Lorenz.   [jet]
