This original Civil War shoulder arm in very good overall condition is a Colt “Special Model 1861” contract rifle musket made from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. Though no serial numbers were used during the production of the M1861 Special musket, records indicate that some 100,000 such muskets were produced during that period with many supplied for various state sub-contracts.
Longarm is a percussion, .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel and three iron barrel bands. No band springs. Lockplate markings are standard Colt Special markings: “U. S. / COLTS’ PT F. A. MFG CO / HARTFORD, CT” in front of the hammer and “1863” date behind. All markings are clear but thin. Spreadwinged eagle stamped on bolster below the nipple. No hints of original case colors. All gun metal is cleaned to a pleasing light gray luster.
Barrel markings shows very deep and clear proof marks “V / P/ eaglehead” on the left barrel breech facet, with “F.E.M. STEEL” under that. A sharp matching date “1863” stamped on top of the breech. Original ramrod very good, retaining its threaded tip; fits very tight in channel. Musket exhibits the standard, blued two-leaf rear sight and three screw-type barrel bands. Sling swivels at the trigger guard and the middle band. All screw heads in good shape. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Bore is clear with strong rifling and light pitting. Various components exhibit sub-inspector marks. Butt plate is stamped with worn “US” and “H / 28”.
Black walnut stock is in good original condition. Strong wood with no cracks or chips. Shows light wear as normal. Stock flat opposite the hammer is worn with no government cartouches remaining.
A classic M1861 Colt Special Model musket in very good overall condition. [jet]
