An original Harper’s Ferry Model 1842, .69 caliber, smoothbore musket in good condition. The metal surfaces all appear to have been lightly cleaned.
Barrel surface is as described above with a number of what looks to be vice teeth marks on top of the breech. Proofmarks “V / P/ eaglehead” are clear on the breech but the barrel date of “1851” is partially obscured by the vice marks. Barrel also exhibits the small Harper’s Ferry mark of “PB” over “P” forward of the proofmarks. Musket also retains its blade front sight on the forward barrel band and there is no rear sight. Bore is dark and slightly dirty.
Lock has a strong spread-winged eagle over small “US” forward of the hammer and “HARPERS / FERRY / 1851” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple is original. Mechanics are good.
Black walnut stock is in good original condition and exhibits quite a few scattered dings and dents. Both sides of the butt have some carving. The right side has a “B” done in punched dots and a carved “W” that has been lined out. Near the “B” there is a faint “JH.” The left side of the butt has a clear “J. M.” followed by some scratches and an “R” with an “L” forward of and above it. There is one closed horizontal crack running from the top lock screw toward the barrel. The flat opposite the lock shows one faint cartouche mark. Ramrod channel has some minor dents and chips from age and use.
There is a good “US” stamped on the butt plate tang. Wood in this area has some chips. Musket retains its original trumpet type steel ramrod with flat head and threaded tip. [ad]
