This original Model 1861 U.S. Percussion Rifle-Musket was made by the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. A .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader dated 1861, this longarm is in very good condition. Barrel has a bright, smooth surface with patchy finger prints. A series of small dings at muzzle. Bore is clean with good rifling. Breech is lightly marked with “1861” on top and with eagle head and “VP” on left side. Musket is complete and retains its original stock, iron nipple and bolster screw, “C” shaped hammer, swell-shaped ramrod, barrel bands and springs, sling swivels, sights, and butt plate. All of these parts in uniform condition and color. Lockplate nicely stamped with a detailed, spread-winged eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” motif front of hammer. A strong, sharp “1861” date stamped on lockplate behind the hammer. Mechanics very good.
Black walnut stock in very good condition overall with just normal dings and nicks from age and use, no cracks or repairs. Beautiful color and finish. Traces of two cartouches, almost gone, are visible at the lower right flat opposite the hammer. Comes with original wood tompion.
This is a very nice example of an early Civil War Springfield rifle. [jet]
