Item Code: 721-98

This original British longarm is a .577 caliber, Enfield Pattern 1853 Type II rifle-musket, single-shot muzzleloader in very good condition. Of all the British arms, the third type of the Pattern 1853 rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon that was imported by the North and South during the Civil War. This is a rarely encountered “type II”, an earlier model in the evolution of the Enfield rifle.

Weapon measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. Barrel surface is smooth with the exception of some moderate pitting at the breech and bolster area. Two Birmingham viewer’s marks are on the barrel breech along with “JP 57”. The bore is clean with just scattered hints of oxidation. Rifling is still good. Long range, rear sight is complete. Bayonet lug / blade sight at muzzle.

The lockplate surface is plain with no markings or border. Two sear screws behind the hammer. Hammer appears to be a replacement. Mechanics are strong. Snap cap is reproduction.

Has original ramrod, barrel bands (the fore most being 1” wide on this version of rifle), band springs (this version of the Enfield rifle utilized band springs) and sling swivels. Gun metal parts look to have had a light coat of brown stain applied. All brass furniture exhibits a mellow /dark patina. Butt plate tang stamped “578”.

Black walnut stock is strong with a clean surface and original finish.  No cracks but stock does show minor dings and some small chips at the barrel bands.

A nice, early Enfield rifle.  [jet]
