Total length 52½” long. Barrel length 37½” long, .54 caliber. The Lorenz rifle-musket was second to the British Enfield in total numbers of longarms imported. Single-shot, percussion muzzle loader. Stock is of brown walnut that has been refinished. Three small (1/2” high) hand carved initials “X / J. W” on right shoulder stock. Flat retains lightly rounded corners with minor dings from age and use. Also a small inspector stamp on stock above butt plate tang and underneath back of triggerguard tang. Stock has no raised cheek-piece. All gun metal cleaned. Iron lockplate surface bears a light gray sheen. Beveled lockplate at the curved tail and at the front. Lockplate free of any markings.
Part octagon / part round barrel secured to stock with three iron bands and three band springs, all marked with assembly numbers, proof and inspector stamps. Barrel has the stamped, graduated long-range folding rear sight and a blade front sight with a bayo lug. Top flat of barrel breech shows the maker, private contractor “CARL HA_SER” spelled Carl Heiser in reference material; apparently a stamping error. Barrel left and right facets also exhibit light stampings / proofs on the flats, not discernable. Sideplate not marked. Bore dirty but rifling strong with light scattered pitting overall. Should clean up to semi-bright. Mechanics crisp. Original ramrod is of the cupped variant and retains its threaded tip. Soldiers considered these weapons ‘good shooters.’ A nice Austrian M1854 ‘Lorenz’ contract rifle-musket.
