This original British contract longarm is a .577 caliber, Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, single-shot muzzleloader in good overall condition. Of all the British arms, the Pattern 1853 Type III rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon that replaced all earlier infantry models in the British Army. The majority of Enfield Pattern 1853 muskets were produced by private contractors / gun makers for both the US and CS governments. Just over 500,000 Pattern 1853 muskets were purchased / imported by the US Ordnance Department during the Civil War.
Musket measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. The lockplate surface is dark gray and exhibits scattered light rust pitting. Only lock markings are “BARNETT / LONDON” in front of the hammer. No Victoria’s “crown” or ‘V. R.’ letters. Mechanics weak. Barrel surface wears a mottled dark gray and black appearance. Visible light rust pitting overall. Breech area heavily pitt4ed as expected. Unusual proof marks visible on the left barrel facet show viewer’s marks and letters “P” and “V”. No gauge marks visible. Specimen has a dark bore with rust pitting visible. Three-groove rifling good. All brass furniture exhibits a mellow patina including nose cap. Strong, uncleaned black walnut stock with a1” long crack at left breech area adjacent to brass lock washer. No other cracks visible. 1” high letter “H” hand carved into left shoulder area. No other maker markings visible.
An attractive original British Enfield pattern M1853 rifle musket by contractor Barnett of London.
