MODEL 1861 SPRINGFIELD TYPE MUSKET-CONTRACT TRENTON DATED 1863

$1,895.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 31-1534

This example of the model 1861 58. Caliber, Springfield type rifle musket contracted to the U.S. Government by James T. Hodge & Addison M. Burt of the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company, Trenton, New Jersey. The Trenton contract was received on December 26 1861 for 50,000 rifles. The full delivery number of arms from 1862-1864 was 21,995.

The specimen shown here is complete and in excellent condition. Barrel is a full 40” in length mounted on its American walnut stock. The lock plate exhibits the year of manufacture 1863 along with the American spread eagle and U.S. TRENTON markings. All three barrel bands are marked with the letter U and the breech area shows the proof marks of the letters V P over the figure of the eagle’s head. The State designation of NJ is stamped on the flat of the breech and into the stock between the lock screws. The date on the breech is 1863 and matches the date on the face of the lock plate.

Surface conditions of the barrel, lock and other metallic fittings exhibit a light to medium grade of pitting and oxidation stains. The stock is complete and without major damage; there are some dents & scratches mostly located between the upper and middle barrel bands. A figure of the letter “W” (meaning unknown) is carved into flat top surface of the shoulder stock area above the butt plate. Rifling is present and still is very strong. No inspector’s marks are visible on stock. The lock still has a strong pull and seats well on half cock and full cock position. A nice example of a mid-war period rifle.
