Harpers Ferry Armory manufactured around 105,000 muskets between 1844 and 1855. It is a .69 caliber single shot muzzleloader with a 42 inch barrel. All mountings are iron and have a dusky peppery cleaned patina. The matching lockplate is marked with an American eagle motif over a U.S., and behind the hammer marked vertically is HARPERS FERRY and the date (1851). Lock is crisp and mechanically sound.  The breech of the barrel is marked VP/ eaglehead and the tang is dated 1852. No inspector’s initials are cartouche stamped on the left side of the stock.  Stock is dark and shows heavy use. Ramrod is not original. Bore is semi-bright with no pitting. The Model 42 is the last smoothbore .69 caliber weapon made at both armories with fully interchangeable parts.
