This excellent condition, imported longarm is an early, classic Austrian Model 1842 .70 caliber, rifled, single-shot muzzleloader. Musket measures a total length of 57½” with a 42½” long barrel and is a ‘cone in the barrel’ conversion from flint to percussion. The iron lockplate surface has been cleaned and bears a light gray sheen very light, scattered rust pitting. Lockplate is raised at the curved tail and at the front and exhibits the ‘Crown’ or eagle device at the back of the lockplate but no date visible; likely obliterated due the soft metal. Barrel is secured to stock via three bands with the upper band a double-strapped type with the integral front sight. Rear sight is a simple notched lug on the breech plug-tang. Bands bear maker stampings and are secured via springs that flat on the bottom matching the flattened forend of the stock. The two swivels are attached to the triggerguard and to the middle band.
All furniture is of iron and has been lightly cleaned. Presents a pleasing, light gray coloring. Some cleaning serrations are visible on the metal surfaces. Bore strong with light scattered pitting overall. Should clean up to semi-bright. Left facet of the barrel breech area shows the manufacture date with the first digit (1) omitted of “847” instead of 1847. Remnants of the “I B” also visible on the left facet. Barrel breech tang stamped. Side plate is stamped with a small, 5-point star at the center and both screws are stamped and numbered. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Iron triggerguard excellent with inspector marks visible. Butt plate also stamped with markings, likely rack numbers. Stock has no raised cheek-piece as often found with the early specimens. The attractive stock is of semi-hard whitewood that features pronounced and distinctive graining effects. Wood has been coated with a clear sealant and bears no visible repairs, cracks or chips. Original ramrod is of the cupped variant and in excellent condition. A very fine Austrian M1842 conversion rifled musket.
