This original, Enfield Pattern 1853 British longarm is a .577 caliber, single-shot, muzzle loading rifle-musket in very good overall condition. Of all the British arms, the Pattern 1853 rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon and replaced all earlier infantry models in the British Army. The majority of Enfield Pattern 1853 muskets were produced by private contractors / gun makers for both the US and CS governments. Just over 500,000 Pattern 1853 muskets were purchased / imported by the US Ordnance Department during the Civil War. This musket, produced by the Royal Arms Factory at Enfield, England, measures a total length of 55” and has a 39” long barrel. The iron lockplate surface is dusky, dark gray color and exhibits a mild peppery look from scattered fine rust pitting. No original browning remains on barrel. Lock markings are the standard “crown” over initials “V.R.” (Victoria’s Regina) behind the hammer. Lockplate shows sharp numerals and block letters “1863 / ENFIELD” in front of the hammer. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Barrel surface wears a pleasing dusky, mottled light plum patina. Left side of barrel near breech exhibits the bore or gauge size “25” in addition to various proof marks. Also, visible on the breech area are British viewer’s marks and two small stampings of “LAC” indicating the barrel was produced at the London Armory Company.
Has the folding long range rear sight and the small blade front sight. Rifled bore shows scattered light pitting and oxidation areas overall. Should clean to semi-bright. Black walnut stock is strong with a surface that is dark and uncleaned. A clear stock maker’s mark of a 7/8” diameter, double ring stamp is found on the right side shoulder stock near the butt plate. Outer ring bears “LONDON ARMOURY / BERMONDLSEY ” while the inner circle has the mark “1861.” The LAC established its operation in 1856 in the south-eastern Bermondsey section of London to produce revolvers (Kerr) and infantry arms. No cracks or breaks in the stock. Shows just normal minor dings, dents and light scuffs from age and use. Original ramrod, slightly bent near the tip has the knurled, slotted tip and threaded point. A nice Enfield Pattern 1853 Rifled Musket.
