RUSSIAN CONTRACT WINCHESTER MODEL 1895

$1,800.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 740-399

Winchester manufactured 425,800 Model 1895’s from 1896 to 1931. It came in  30-30, 30-06, 30-40 Krag, 303 British, 35 Winchester, 38-72,40-72,405 Winchester, and 7.62 Russian caliber. They had a lever action with a box magazine beneath the frame. Socks are oil stained but some are varnished. Finish is blued. Serial numbers were marked on the lower tang, and upper tank was marked WINCHESTER and MODEL 1895 in four basic ways. Left side of the frame is Winchester name, address and patent dates with variations in dates. Breech was marked with the caliber or on the barrel.

Between 1915 and 1917 approximately 300,000 M1895's were manufactured for Russia. Chambered in 7.62 x 54 mm these musket versions were unusual for a lever-action rifle in that they also had a charger guide, allowing the M1895 rifle to be reloaded by the same charger clip used in the Mosin-Nagant rifle. Rifles made for the Russian contract had a longer than standard barrel fitted with an extended forestock  and bayonet lug.

This particular example offered here is serial numbered 182694. All metal is a matching brown patina with traces of original finish. Wood is good but does have one chip and one area of the stock that has missing wood. Bore is dark but strong. Russian markings throughout.
