This quality percussion cap and ball sporting arm is a heavy, seldom-seen target rifle manufactured sometime in the mid-nineteenth century by gunsmith Henry Pierce of Liverpool, Medina County, Ohio. In excellent condition, this fourteen-pound muzzleloading rifle is fitted with an over and under barrel, each of .42 caliber. Plain lockplate is clearly stamped with the maker’s name “H. PIERCE / LIVERPOOL / OHIO” behind two, right mounted side hammers with knurled fingers. Original nipples. Mechanics crisp and strong. Round steel barrels measure 32½” long, and each exhibits a dark plum brown patina and each bore has fine, bright, strong rifling. The over barrel is fitted with a 1” long brass front blade 1¼” from the muzzle, an adjustable front tang sight, and a adjustable target peep sight at the barrel breech. Stock is of high-grade black walnut mounted with brass furniture including a decorative patchbox, deeply scalloped brass buttplate, triggerguard, ramrod tips and lock screw washer. All brass wears a mellow patina. Cheek piece on stock’s right side shows a very fine, silver-inlaid, eight-point star. No original colors on the metal. Both original ramrods present. A quality American target rifle from the 19th century.
