Presented here is a complete cap and ball percussion sidearm manufactured by the Manhattan Firearms Company of Newark, New Jersey. Revolver is a Manhattan Series “II”, .36 caliber model revolver designated the ‘Navy Type’. In good overall condition, this sidearm has a three-screw frame and bears close resemblance to the Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver. It has an unrebated, five-paneled roll-engraved cylinder mated to a 6½” long octagonal barrel. A total quantity of 78,000 of Manhattan Navy pocket handguns were produced in Newark from the late 1850’s through the late 1860s.
The five-shot cylinder retains just traces of the roll engraved scene, as well as its complement of ten safety notches at the back of the cylinder. In mechanically poor to fair condition, the revolver features a moderate amount of old rust pitting focused at the muzzle and at the frame, likely from holster storage. All gunmetal appears cleaned. This revolver does bear matching serial numbers of “54653” on the cylinder, spline, barrel, wedge, frame, triggerguard, and buttstrap. All nipples original and are in very good condition. No case colors.
The smooth, one-piece walnut grips are unvarnished and are in excellent condition, likely a replacement. Revolver has the two-line maker mark of “MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS MFG. CO. NEWARK N.J. / PATENTED MARCH 8, 1864” stamped on the top barrel facet. Stamping is visible but worn. Exterior surface shows moderate to heavy scattered pitting and average wear all consistent with this weapon’s age and use. Screws are in fair condition. Sidearm has a brass trigger guard and the brass backstrap and his missing one T/G screw under the frame. This affordable Manhattan .36 caliber ‘Navy Type’ model makes a great addition to any collection of military secondary sidearms.
